1931 World Table Tennis Championships

The 5th World Table Tennis Championship took place from 10 to 15 February 1931 ( some sources date the WM incorrectly on January 10 to 15 ) in Budapest ( Hungary) in the hall Sportelet instead. This Budapest was the second time ( after 1929 ) the host of the World Cup.

Survey

The Hungarians dominated the tournament. They took first place in all disciplines. Among the eleven participating men's teams, the Golden Team Hungary again proved to be far superior to what was the score of 50:2 points clear.

In general, it was consistently the same winner as in the previous World Cup - with one exception: In the men's singles Miklos Szabados became world champion. Looking back, was his playoff victory over Victor Barna a great achievement, because it was Barnas only defeat in the six years between 1930 and 1935.

The German team finished 5th and ended up with it in a World Cup for the first time not in the lower half of the table. Although Nikita Madjaroglou had Greek citizenship, but occurred with the German team, because Greece had not yet served on the International Tennis Association. In individual he defeated Lajos Laszlo Bellak and David Leopold, but then lost against Victor Barna despite 2-0 set lead.

In the women's singles Mona Müller- elm from Germany took the second place. First was - for the fifth time in a row - the Hungarian Maria Mednyanszky.
