1939–40 AHL season
The season 1939/40, was the fourth regular season of the International - American Hockey League ( from 1940 American Hockey League - AHL ). During the regular season, the four teams in the East Division denied each of 54 games, while the five teams in the West Division during 56 games disputed. The six best teams in the league then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Calder Cup Playoffs
Mode
For the play-offs, the six best teams in the American Hockey League qualified. The two winners of the duels of the teams ranked two to four came together in the second round, while the winner of the duel between the two division winners qualified automatically by a bye to the final. The first two play-off rounds took place in the best-of -three mode, with the two division winners in the best- of-five mode played for the finals. The final itself was also played in the best- of-five mode.
