1949 South American Championships in Athletics
The XVI. Athletics South America Championships were held until April 24, 1949 in Lima on 16. Three men won two titles: the Peruvian Sprinter Gerardo Salazar, Argentine long-distance runner Ricardo Bralo and the Argentine Mehrkämpfer Enrique Kistenmacher. In the women's competitions the Brazilians Elizabeth Miller and Wanda dos Santos and the Argentine pitcher Ingeborg Mello also won two titles. Müller took an additional two second places, Mello was in the third litter discipline third parties.

The team competition was won in the men's team of Argentina with 265.5 points ahead of the Chileans with 135.5 of the Brazilian team with 112 points and points. Behind Peru reached 88 points, Uruguay 70 points and 6 points Ecuador, Venezuela was no point.
