1950 Atlantic hurricane season

The 1950 Atlantic hurricane season officially began on June 15, 1950 and ended on 15 November 1950. It was the first season in the tropical cyclones name has been assigned. The 1950 season was with 13 tropical storms, of which all but two hurricanes developed to a very active season. A total of eight hurricanes were classified as major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher ), which is a record to this day.

Overview

From the start of the season on 15 June to early August, the tropical Atlantic was also compared to other seasons remarkably calm as the U.S. Weather Bureau noted. This changed on August 12, when formed, the first tropical storm of the season east of the Lesser Antilles. The storm was Hurricane "Able " baptized and grew up in the days following a hurricane of stage 4 from. In the next four weeks caused a further five tropical storms, all of which grew into major hurricanes of Category 3 or higher. The strongest of the storms was Hurricane " Dog", which is the highest category 5 and wind speeds up to 295 km / h reached.

Then after Hurricane Fox followed a roughly three -week calmer phase in which developed no tropical storms. Only after Hurricane George, which was formed on 27 September, the Atlantic became more active again. Overall, formed in October, six more storms, four of which reached hurricane strength, however, were only two of them develop severe hurricanes. With the Category 1 hurricane "Love", which dissolved on 21 October, ended the 1950 hurricane season.
