1953–54 French Division 2

The season 1953/54, was the 15th staging of the professional French football Division 2 second-division champion Olympique Lyon.

Were eligible to participate, the 15 clubs that were after the previous season went not into the first division have their license - had given up - voluntarily or forced. There were also three Erstligaabsteiger and two freshmen who had assumed professional status.

Thus, in this season following 20 teams played for the championship of Division 2:

  • A team from the far north (U.S. Valenciennes Anzin )
  • Five from Paris and the Champagne or the Ardennes (CA Paris, relegated Racing Paris, Red Star Olympique, AS Troyes - Savinienne, UA Sedan- Torcy newbie )

A direct ascent and descent depending on the sporting result achieved it had before the Second World War only given between first and second professional division; then a descent was introduced in the third- highest division for several years, the 1953/54, however, was no longer in force. In addition, a Zweitdivisionär could stay if he gave his license or has been taken from him. Existing amateur teams, however, could continue only for the following season ascend to Division 2 when they were given permission by the relevant association FFF to accept professional status. In addition there was a relegation this season between the lowest ranked first division, the descent directly, and the best, not directly climb legitimate second division.

Course of the season and Table

Each team wore against each group opponent a back and a leg off, even before a home crowd and once away. It was the two- point rule; case of a tie, the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement. In France, the number of plus points is called when specifying the point ratio exclusively; Again, this is done in Germany in the days of the 2- point rule usual notation.

Until well into the second half into five counterparties were able to figure out yet serious chances to rise or at least the relegation place. In the last eight weeks but then fell contemporary often referred to as "workers footballer " ( footballers - ouvriers ) designated Neuprofis from Sedan - almost all the players worked to continue in a local cloth mill - and FC Rouen back. Among the remaining three teams - all particularly strong attack with over 100 season hits - Lyon sat at the very end of the season yet, while between Troyes and Paris Racing finally only the Torquotient was the decisive factor. However, also ended for the capital club, the season forgiving, because he also returned on the Relegation to Division 1 (see below ). Another Erstligaabsteiger fared particularly poorly, however: Montpellier wore in the final table with a clear gap to second-bottom, CA Paris, the " red lantern ".

In the 380 encounters 1,259 goals were scored; which corresponds to an average of 3.3 goals per game. The top scorer won Jean Courteaux (Racing Paris) with 36 gates.

After the season all teams retain their professional status. For the following season the three Erstligaabsteiger FC Sète, Le Havre AC and Stade Français completed the Division 2; new professional licenses did not forgive the Football Association.

After Racing had won the first leg by only one goal in the penultimate minute 2-1, enough for him in the second game a draw (2-2 ) for its chances of promotion, where Racing's shock striker Jean Courteaux ( 2), Thadée Cisowski and Stanislas Curyl worried the hit. These two meetings had attracted a total of approximately 55,000.
