1953 Carrera Panamericana

The fourth Carrera Panamericana took place from 23 to 27 November 1953, was the seventh championship round of the World Sportscar Championship this year.

The race

The route

The fourth Carrera Panamericana led eight special stages and a route length of 3077 km. The race was started in Tuxtla Gutiérrez and led through Ciudad Juárez and Cihauhau back to the starting point.

The Teams

With five vehicles, a lot of manpower and material, the works team of Lancia came to Mexico. The Italians had three D24 and D23 two prepared for the long road race, all of which were reported in the class for sports cars 1.6-liter displacement. The team led by Lancia had a top driver undertakes to win the overall rating of this race. Juan Manuel Fangio, the Formula 1 world champion of the season in 1951 contributed a D24; his passenger was the Italian Gino Bronzoni. Piero Taruffi how Felice Bonetto also a D24. The two D23 were driven by the young Eugenio Castellotti and by Giovanni Bracco. Especially on Bracco rested the hopes of the Lancia team leadership. Born in Biella Italian was regarded as a specialist in long road races. In the previous year he had won the Mille Miglia and was located in the Carrera long lead before was canceled due to a defect. Before the start of the third stage, there was an act of great sportsmanship. Bracco sent word over to journalists Günther Molter a stunned Mercedes team that it had no more sense to go fast, since his car suffered major technical problems and he would soon fail. In fact, a few miles the transmission of the Ferrari went to start the last leg broken and the victory went to Mercedes.

For Lincoln, the U.S. maker of luxury vehicles, the Carrera was of particular importance. The attention of the media and thus the advertising effect in Mexico and the United States were large. For Lincoln, this public perception was important; therefore, Lincoln was represented at the Carrera with factory cars. The preparation and the use of the three Capri were left to the race team of Bob Estes. As a driver, Chuck Stevenson, Walt Faulkner, Chuck Daigh, Johnny Mantz, Clay Smith and Bill slings were committed. A fourth car, Jack McGrath and Manuel Ayulo controlled, was reported by Ronald Ferguson.

Officially, not at the start was the Scuderia Ferrari. Enzo Ferrari but supported the Scuderia Gustalla Franco Cornacchia logistically. Cornacchia came with four Ferrari 375MM to Mexico. One of the drivers was Umberto Maglioli, who won the Carrera a year later. Cornacchia reported just before closing date, a fifth vehicle; a Chrysler New Yorker Special was driven by the two Italians Antonio and Giuseppe Stagnoli Scotuzzi.

Worth mentioning are also three German messages: Porsche 550 Spyder took two at the start; as drivers Hans Herrmann and Karl Kling were committed. Adolf Brudes went with a Borgward Hansa 1500RS at the start.
