1956â€“57 European Cup
The European Cup of Champions 1956/57, was the second edition of the competition. 22 club teams participated, including 21 national champion of the previous season with Real Madrid of the defending champion.
The participants played in the pure Cup mode (except for the final) round-trip games for the crown of European club football. Case of a tie, there was a playoff on neutral ground. Twelve clubs had to start in the first round, another ten began in the second round.
The final took place on 30 May 1957 at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid in front of 120,000 spectators instead. Real Madrid won 2-0 against Fiorentina, the second edition of the competition. Scorer Dennis Viollet Manchester United with nine goals.
