1956–57 in English football

The Football League First Division 1956/57, was the 58th season of the Football League First Division as the highest English football league. Manchester United won by eight points distance to the immediate rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Preston North End now the fifth English championship in the club's history and defended the title from the previous year. Both newly promoted Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday could get the class; instead had the Cardiff City Charlton Athletic and the transition to the Second Division compete. These two teams should be in the following season replaced by the two newly promoted second division Nottingham Forest and Leicester City.

A total of 536 players were used, with Leeds United and Charlton Athletic at the least 30 mustered 17 most players in league games. 127 newcomers were offset by 134 footballers who most recently came into play in the season 1956/57.

As regards the specific arrangements prior to the introduction of the Premier League, there is lack of clarity, all the players with an asterisk (*) have been provided which have received no champion medal presumably because of their small contribution.
