1956 South American Championship

The Campeonato Sudamericano 1956 was the 24th edition of the South American continental championship in football and was held from January 21 to February 15 for the fifth time in Uruguay instead. Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela did not participate.

The tournament was as usual ( FFA ) played in the league system. Case of a tie for first place, a playoff was provided. All matches were played at the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo. Here, some games were sequentially discharged in a day as part of a doubleheader as in previous tournaments.

Uruguay 1956 home advantage also for the fifth time without defeat for the ninth time in total South American champions in football and was in the fifth host in their own country.
