1957–58 European Cup

The European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1957/58 was the third edition of the competition. 24 club teams participated, including 23 national champion of the previous season and with the Sevilla FC of the Spanish runner-up, as the Spanish champions Real Madrid qualified automatically as defending champions.

The participants played in the Cup mode with pure (except for the final) round-trip games for the crown of European club football. Case of a tie, there was a play on neutral ground, also ended the draw, the winner was determined by coin toss. 16 teams had to start in the first round, another eight began in the second round.

The finale was held at Heysel Stadium in Brussels before 67,000 spectators on 28 May 1958. Real Madrid won 3-2 after extra time against AC Milan, the third edition of the competition. Scorer of the Argentine Alfredo Di Stefano of Real Madrid with ten goals.

This European campaign was overshadowed by the crash of British European Airways Flight 609 on February 6, 1958 at the Munich- Riem airport, as the team of Manchester United on the flight back from the quarter -final second leg in Belgrade against Red Star ( Full 3:3 ) was located. The machine shot when trying to start on the runway beyond. 23 people died in the accident killed, including eight United player.

The first legs took place on April 2 / 8 May the return legs on 16 April/14. May 1958 instead.
