The Wolverhampton Wanderers won by five points adrift at Preston North End, the second English championship in their history. Both newly promoted Nottingham Forest and Leicester City could get the class; instead had the AFC Sunderland and Sheffield Wednesday the transition to the Second Division compete. These two teams should be in the following season replaced by the two second-division promoted Blackburn Rovers and West Ham United.

A total of 529 players were used, with Preston North End and Sheffield Wednesday the fewest with 30 mustered 18 most players in league games. 124 newcomers were offset by as many footballers who most recently came into play in the season 1957/58.
