Like last year, André Darrigade won the first stage, but the next day he had to give his yellow jersey to his French teammate René Privat, who won the second stage with three minutes ahead of the peloton. Darrigade could later win the last two stages.

Until the fifth stage private was able to defend his lead before one arrived with several favorites studded breakaway group: Gilbert Bauvin in the prior year second overall, won the stage, Jacques Anquetil took over the yellow jersey at first but only for two days. Only after his stage win in Thonon- les- Bains and good placement on the first mountain stage the next day he was back in the leadership position that he did not relinquish it to the finish in Paris. According to a weakness in the Col d' Aubisque to Anquetil began again and built with his two victories in the individual time trial his lead over the runner-up Marcel Janssens almost 15 minutes.

Gastone Nencini, who like Janssens in the overall standings against the French team in the mountains had no chance to see the mountain classification secured. The green jersey won Jean Forestier from France. Adolf Christian was able to achieve a place on the podium as the first Austrian.

After the French team had left a driver of a regional team to win the Tour de France last year, the team was rejuvenated and the only 23 years old, Anquetil won clearly in his first Tour participation. Overall, the team won 13 of the 24 stages to Anquetil, wearing on all but one stage, the yellow jersey and stood next to the overall winner and the winner of the green jersey.
