1959–60 Norwegian Main League

The Hovedserien 1959/60 was the 16th season of Norway's highest football league and the twelfth season under the name Hovedserien. The season began on 26 July 1959, and ended with the match for third place on 16 June 1960.

Mode

The 16 teams played in two groups of eight teams in a single game round return match against each other so that each team completed 14 games. The two last placed each had to dismount.

The champion was determined in a final of the top two. For the first time the champion from Norway qualified for the European Cup of Champions.

New this season was that the third place also has been determined by a final match.

In comparison to the previous season, the groups were re-divided part.

Season

Fredrikstad FK was the eighth time Norwegian champion.

Of the climbers had to dismount again SK and IK Brage start. SK Rapid and Vålerengen IF were able to keep in Hovedserien.
