1959 FIBA World Championship

The 3rd World Basketball Championship for Men was held from 16 to 31 January 1959 in Chile instead. The tournament was organized by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA ). There were 13 teams against each other.

The Brazilian national basketball team became the first world champion. Vice World Champion was the defending champion from 1954, the national basketball team of the United States. Third place went to the team from Chile.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round of four teams played in three groups against each other. The winner of the match was awarded two points, the loser one point. Stand a game at the end of regulation time draw, so there was extension.

Group A

The preliminary matches of group A were held in Concepcion from 16 to 18 January 1959.

Group B

The preliminary matches of Group B were held in Temuco from 16 to 18 January 1959.

Group C

The preliminary round Group C matches were played in Antofagasta from 16 to 18 January 1959.

Classification round

The classification round was held in Valparaíso and Santiago de Chile from 21 to 23 January 1959. After the preliminary round, the third - and fourth-placed each preliminary round group played in the first round of classification in one of two groups against two new opponents. Final round

The final round was held in Santiago de Chile from 20 to 31 January 1959. After the preliminary competition, qualified the first two teams in each group for the final round. * Since the Soviet Union and Bulgaria refused in the final round to compete against Taiwan, they were assigned to the last two places in the final table of the final round.
