1959 South American Championship (Argentina)

The Campeonato Sudamericano 1959 was the 26th edition of the South American continental championship in football and was held from March 7 to April 4 for the seventh time in Argentina instead. The winner was undefeated and for the twelfth time in Argentina, which thereby continued to expand his record. Brazil, with his future world star Pele, also did not lose a game, but came in the final and decisive match against Argentina to a 1-1 draw not out and had to be content with second place.

In the same year, a second competition was held in Ecuador.

Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela did not participate.

The tournament was held as usual in the league system, each of the seven teams once had to play against each other. As with previous tournaments, some games were sequentially discharged in a day as part of a doubleheader. Case of a tie for first place, a playoff was provided.

Venue and audience

All matches were played at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires. For the third time in the history of the tournament attracted over one million viewers watched the games, even if the attendance record from the tournament in 1945 in Chile was not achieved.
