1961–62 Norwegian Main League

The Hovedserien 1960/61, was the 18th season of Norway's highest football league and the 14th and final season under the name Hovedserien. The season began on July 30, 1961 and ended with the championship final on 31 October 1962.

Mode

The 16 teams played in a group in a single game round return match against each other so that each team completed 30 games. The first eight teams qualified for the launch in next year's first single-track Divisjon. The last eight teams had to dismount.

A peculiarity of this season was the length: total over a period of 15 months, the Championship was held. This was due to the change of the season. Due to the climatic conditions of the winter break in Norway was always much longer (5-6 months) than the summer break (maximum 2 months). In order not to distort competition to the very decision was taken to carry out the season in the months of April to October / November in a train, that is in a calendar year. This one was the continuous performance of the teams equitably. For this conversion, this season has been extended by summarizing the teams of the two groups of the preseason and the four climbers in a single group and they all did play against each other. So the opportunity has been preserved because it could not be any lighter or heavier group.

Season

The promoted Brann Bergen was the first time Norwegian champion.

In addition, could still qualify with Frigg and Steinkjær I & FK two other clubs for the first Divisjon. Only FK Ørn had to descend again.

For the European Cup of Champions, however, qualified Fredrikstad FK, since they were the leaders after 21 match day, which suited time yet for the start of the European Cup. Then there was a break of four weeks from the game (which would have corresponded to the end of the regular season 1961/62 ). Otherwise Norway could have in this competition send any team in the season 1962/63.
