1962–63 European Cup Winners' Cup

The European Cup Winners 'Cup 1962/63 was the third playout of the competition of European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 25 club teams from 24 countries took part, including defending champion Atletico Madrid, 20 reigning Cup winner and three inferior Cup finalists (Vitória Setúbal FC Portadown and Grazer AK). Hungary despatched with the Újpesti Dózsa SC again the runner-up, there was a nationwide cup competition until 1964.

From Germany the DFB Cup winners were 1st FC Nuremberg, from the GDR of fdgb Cup winners SC Chemie Halle, from Austria to the finalist of the OFB Cup Grazer AK and from Switzerland FC Lausanne-Sport at the start.

The finale on May 15, 1963 at the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam Tottenham Hotspur won 5-1 against defending champion Atletico Madrid. Tottenham was becoming the first British club that could win a European Cup title.

Scorers were Georgi Asparuchow of DNA Plovdiv and James "Jimmy" Greaves of the Hotspurs, each with six hits.

Mode

The participants played as usual in pure Cup mode with return games the winner. In Torgleichstand Overtime in the return leg a decision match took place on neutral ground. The away goals rule was not yet considered. The final was decided on one game at a neutral venue. However, a replay would be here at the score is level after extra time been recognized as a penalty shootout was not provided.

First round

The first legs were held until September 20, the return matches from 18 September to 3 October 1962 by 5.

The match took place on 10 October 1962.

2nd round

The first legs took place from October 18 to November 14, the return matches on 7./14./21. and November 28, 1962 instead.

The match took place on 4 December 1962.

Quarterfinals

The first legs took place on 5./6./27. February and 21 March, the return matches on 13./14./20. and March 24, 1963 instead.

Decision-making

The match took place on April 3, 1963.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on 10./24. April and the return legs on 24 April / 1 May 1963 instead.
