1962–63 French Division 2

The season 1962/63 was the 24th edition of the professional French football Division 2 second-division champion was the AS Saint- Étienne.

Were eligible to participate, the 15 clubs that were after the previous season went not into the first division have their license - voluntary or otherwise - had given up; this came four Erstligaabsteiger.

Thus, in this season following 19 teams played for the championship of Division 2:

  • Three teams from the far north (CO Roubaix - Tourcoing, Lille OSC, U.S. Boulogne )
  • Three from Paris or Champagne (CA Paris, Red Star Olympique, AS Troyes - Savinienne )
  • Four from the Northeast (U.S. Forbach, the two relegated FC Metz FC Sochaux, Racing Club Franc- Comtois Besançon),
  • Four from the West ( relegated Le Havre AC, AS Cherbourg, Nantes, Limoges FC )
  • Five from the south ( relegated AS Saint -Etienne, AS Béziers, AS Aix, SC Toulon, AS Cannes).

A direct ascent and descent depending on the sporting result, there was obtained only between the first and second professional division; after the Second World War, a descent was introduced in the third- highest division for several years, in the meantime, however, was no longer in force. A Zweitdivisionär could descend into the case so alone, that he gave his license or has been taken from him. Existing amateur teams, however, could continue only for the following season ascend to Division 2 when they were given permission by the relevant association FFF to accept professional status. This season there was no relegation between the lowest ranked first division, the descent directly, and the best, not directly climb legitimate second division.

Course of the season and Table

Each team wore against each group opponent a back and a leg off, even before a home crowd and once away. It was the two- point rule; case of a tie, the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement. In France, the number of plus points is called when specifying the point ratio exclusively; Again, this is done in Germany in the days of the 2- point rule usual notation.

The AS Saint- Étienne marched with only three defeats - 1-3 at Béziers, 1:6 at the bottom of Aix -en- Provence and at home 0:1 against FC Nantes, in which they, however, even won the first leg 4-0 had - the undisputed championship and returned immediately to the Division 1. With these two teams were the only serious pursuer Sochaux and Le Havre keep reasonably step, brought in the direct duels against the two top teams this year but only three or two of the eight points to be awarded. Here Sochaux had on the final day yet had the success in their own hands; the " Peugeot's club" this subject, however, before a record crowd of 16 959 paying spectators at FC Nantes 0-2. At this time was not to guess that both climbers should dominate the French club football for the next nearly two decades; the "Green " from Saint- Étienne won in 1964 and the " Yellow " from Nantes - who had never played first-class - from 1965 to 1983, together a total of 15 championship titles, as well as six times the Coupe de France. Above all, they began first in the country to build up its own junior training centers and developed under her long-time coaches ( Snella, Batteux and Herbin in the ASSE, Arribas and Vincent at FCN ) is a modern, independent, while attractive play that later other France sought to imitate clubs and began to make the French Football altogether from the mid-1980s also internationally competitive.

Since there were only two places rise this season, the two previous relegated Sochaux and Le Havre had to spend another year in the second division, as well as the fourth relegated from Metz, who even just reached a place in mid-table. In the lower part of the final ranking to Aix was the third time since 1960 " red lantern" as the carrier of again. Three of the slightly higher-ranked teams moved to end of the season, however, the consequences of their cases longstanding failure in the task of the second division with their generally low attendances and non-cost- revenue permanently leaving in the direction of the first League: Roubaix - Tourcoing, CA Paris and Troyes - Savinienne gave up their professional status. An example was the case of the capital city of Cercle Athlétique: they had the second division 23 seasons listened in unbroken succession, once achieved it from 1947/48 as the best position of 14th place, but seven times as a table next to last, and four times as taillight that season ended. Given the fact that they also had three competitors to the local audience 's favor with the Racing Club, Stade Français and Red Star from neighboring Saint- Ouen, in 1963 the long-standing club president Marcel Langiller let himself regardless of all the " improvisation " of professional status for CAP final no longer finance.

In the 342 league matches 1,102 goals were scored; which corresponds to an average of 3.2 goals per game. The top scorer won the Argentinian Ernesto Gianella from Béziers with 24 goals. For the following season the Erstligaabsteiger FC Grenoble, FC Nancy, SO Montpellier and Olympique Marseille were added. The French Football Federation issued any amateur club a new license, so that the division was 2 then discharged with 18 participants.
