1964–65 French Division 2

The season 1964/65 was the 26th edition of the professional French football Division 2 second-division champion was the OGC Nice.

Were eligible to participate, the 13 clubs that were after the previous season went not into the first division have their license - voluntary or otherwise - had given up; this came three Erstligaabsteiger.

Thus, in this season following 16 teams played for the championship of Division 2:

  • A team from the far north (U.S. Boulogne )
  • Three from Paris or Champagne ( relegated Racing Paris, Red Star Olympique, Stade Reims relegated )
  • Three from the Northeast (U.S. Forbach, FC Metz, Franc- Comtois Besançon Racing Club )
  • Two from the West (AS Cherbourg, Limoges FC )
  • Seven from the South (FC Grenoble, AS Béziers, SO Montpellier, Olympique Marseille, AS Aix, relegated OGC Nice, AS Cannes).

A direct ascent and descent depending on the sporting result, there was obtained only between the first and second professional division; after the Second World War, a descent was introduced in the third- highest division for several years, in the meantime, however, was no longer in force. A Zweitdivisionär could descend into the case so alone, that he gave his license or has been taken from him. Existing amateur teams, however, could continue only for the following season ascend to Division 2 when they were given permission by the relevant association FFF to accept professional status. This season there was another relegation between the lowest ranked first division, which does not directly descended, and the best, not directly climb legitimate second division.

Course of the season and Table

Each team wore against each group opponent a back and a leg off, even before a home crowd and once away. It was the two- point rule; case of a tie, the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement. In France, the number of plus points is called when specifying the point ratio exclusively; Again, this is done in Germany in the days of the 2- point rule usual notation. First match was August 30, 1964, last May 29, 1965. Between mid-December and mid-January, there was a winter break.

The direct ascent this time three places went to last year's relegated Nice and with Red Star Saint- Ouen from Cannes and two teams that had shown only second division mediocrity in the previous three seasons. The same was true for the two relegation participants Limoges and Boulogne, the then but still remained in Division 2. The supposed " big names " of the league ( Metz, Reims, Paris or Marseille) were placed all still behind. The " red lantern " in the final standings occupied, as in the previous season and further substantial residue on the table before last, the AS Biterroise from the rugby stronghold of Béziers.

In the 240 encounters a total of 652 goals were scored; which corresponds to an average of 2.72 goals per game and set a new record low in the league history represents the top scorer won Antoine Groschulski of Red Star with 22 goals. The Division 2 - as the French total football - was suffering mid-1960s to a strong deceleration in audience interest, including the increasing Torarmut contributed in the games. The Elf of the once "great" club Olympique Marseille for example, played the end of April 1965 against Forbach ago exactly 434 paying visitors, who lost wide, round to the Velodrome; even Stade Reims, the national champion of 1962, wanted to see only 2,240 spectators still in the same month against Besançon, and the clash of Reims against Marseille on the final day also drew only 2,600 people to the Stade Auguste Delaune.

After the season still was not a club on his professional status. For the following season came just a relegated from Division 1, namely the SC Toulon, added. In addition, the Football Association gave the same five amateur clubs a new professional license ( AC Ajaccio, AS Angoulême, Olympique Avignon, SEC Bastia and U.S. Marignane ) so that the second division should then be discharged with 19 participants.

(A) = relegated from Division 1
