1964 Summer Paralympics

The second Paralympic Summer Games were held despite the lack of experience of the host as disabled sports from 3 to 12 November 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. They found ten days after the end of the XVIII. Summer Olympic Games take place at the same venues. The term was coined Paralympics with these games, they were still in the planning as the 13th International Stoke Mandeville Games for the disabled.

Ceremonies

Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony was held November 3, 1964 in front of about 5,000 spectators in the stadium Oda Field in the Olympic Village. The patrons of the games, Emperor Akihito and Princess Michiko, were present.

Closing ceremony

The closing ceremony took place in front of about 5,000 spectators and in the presence of the Emperor Akihito and Princess Michiko, Sir Guttmann, the representative of the Prime Minister of Japan, the Minister of Health and the Governor of Tokyo in the National Yoyogi Gymnasium on November 12, 1964.

Participating nations

375 athletes from 21 nations took part in the competition in nine sports, including athletes from South Africa: Although excluded from the regular Olympics, starting this year, we allowed the disabled athletes participating in the Paralympics. The United Kingdom provided 70 athletes with the greatest team, followed by the USA with 66 participants.

Sports

In the 2nd Summer Paralympics Weightlifting has been included as a new sport in the competition program. In athletics, the demonstration competition for a mile was a new Paralympic discipline of this sport.
