1968–69 FDGB-Pokal

The 18th competition for the fdgb Football Cup was held in the 1968/69 season.

In the first round of the cup were 46 teams at: 15 District Cup Winners * 29 DDR - Oberliga division and the two losers - in each of the prior soccer league in season 1967 / 68th The East German league team of chemistry Premnitz had a bye. For all pairings of the entire competition, the knock-out system was provided, draw matches were prolonged and repeated, if necessary.

After an elimination round, for the three District Cup winner and nine teams in the East German League were drawn, intervened in the Second Main Round 14 league teams in the competition. With Hansa Rostock, Rot-Weiß Erfurt and Stahl Riesa left here already three Oberliga. The new vice-champion FC Carl Zeiss Jena needed against the District Cup winners motor Grimsby a replay, which he then, however, highly won with 10:1. The second still competing in the competition District Cup winners BFC Dynamo II retired after a 1-2 against East division team Dynamo Dresden.

In the second round it was to repeat the previous year's finale 1 FC Union Berlin - FC Carl Zeiss Jena. With a 1-0 win in Berlin, Jena successfully took revenge. Two DDR -division club, bismuth Gera and Dynamo Dresden were able to qualify for the quarter-finals, but there had to play away from home and each subject clear. Even last year's finalist Jena had to bow out, but also the master missed by a 1:2 at FC Karl- Marx-Stadt the way into the final after a high 1:4 defeat at new master Vorwärts Berlin. In contrast, the 1 FC Magdeburg came with a 2-1 away win against BFC Dynamo for the third time in the final.

Game History

In the duel of the championship third parties against the seventh degree of the league table in 1968/69 only the followers of the 1st FC Magdeburg were inferior in Saxony Dresden. Only 200 Magdeburg were faced with a backdrop of 7000 Karl -Marx- dwellers. Were very different from the situation on the lawn of the Dynamo stadium. A clearly superior 1.FC Magdeburg scored 4-0 the highest playoff victory since 1950, when EHW Thale had won by the same score the trophy.

The encounter began frantically, after a quarter of an hour had Göcke ( FCK ) and Zapf injured ( FCM ) located at the bottom. However, both were able to continue playing, and initially, the Karl- Marx-Stadt worked full Elan good scoring chances. In the 12th minute Göcke just missed the goal in the 27th minute had to tap on the goal line to clarify. These were gratefully accepted, in the 60th minute Ohm was able to start from the centerline of a solo run and the ball away lift emotional over goalkeeper Gröper to 3:0. After eight minutes, it was saving water, the pitting scored the fourth goal for Magdeburg two opponents. This team played in a real rush, had further major opportunities. The last in the 85th minute when saving water forced the substitute goalkeeper Kaschel to a fine save.
