1968–69 French Division 2

The 1968/69 season was the 30th staging of the professional French football Division 2 second-division champion was the SCO Angers.

Were eligible to participate, the 16 clubs that were after the previous season went not into the first division have their license - voluntary or otherwise - had submitted; this came four Erstligaabsteiger and a club which received a new professional license to this season.

Thus, in this season following 21 teams played for the championship of Division 2:

  • Four teams from the far north (U.S. Boulogne, U.S. Dunkerque, the two relegated Racing Lens and Lille OSC ),
  • Three from Paris or Champagne ( the renamed during this season RC Paris - Joinville, Stade Reims, Entente AC Chaumont )
  • Two from the Northeast (AS Nancy, Racing Club Franc- Comtois Besançon),
  • Four from the West (FC Lorient, relegated SCO Angers, Limoges FC, AS Angoulême )
  • Seven from the South (FC Grenoble, AS Béziers, SO Montpellier, Olympique Avignon, Aix relegated AS, SC Toulon, AS Cannes )
  • One from Corsica ( Ajaccio newbie Gazelec FC ).

A direct ascent and descent depending on the sporting result, there was obtained only between the first and second professional division; after the Second World War, a descent was introduced in the third- highest division for several years, in the meantime, however, was no longer in force. A Zweitdivisionär could descend into the case so alone, that he gave his license or has been taken from him. Existing amateur teams, however, could continue only for the following season ascend to Division 2 when they were given permission by the relevant association FFF to accept professional status. This season there was a relegation between the lowest ranked first division, the descent directly, and the best, not directly climb legitimate second division.

Course of the season and Table

Each team wore against each group opponent a back and a leg off, even before a home crowd and once away. It was the two- point rule; testing purposes - and only for this season - a bonus scheme to encourage the attack football has been introduced which especially " torhungrige " teams rewarded (one point for each match in which the team scored at least three goals ). In case of equality the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement. The point games began on 1 September 1968 the last round was held on 15 June 1969. Over Christmas and New Year there was a winter break.

Since there was only one direct ascent and a relegation place again, was expected before the season started with a tough and tight race for the first ranks. In fact, the circle of serious climb candidates was reduced but early on only five teams, one of which was well ahead in the second half of Limoges, Nancy and Toulon two. And in the spring exhibited by the two leading teams relegated from Angers a big gap on his pursuers single Angoulême. These two had, thanks to its storm series also benefited most from the bonus points scheme, each exceeded significantly the 100 - goal mark - Toulon with the third- best attack it brought only 75 goals - and finally reported 26 and 16 points ahead of third-placed to. This bonus scheme had so far proved, as the average number of hits per game in the second division was significantly for the first time in six years, above the three-goal limit; However, the Football Association did not renew it yet about the end of the season also. Four years later, he led them in the first and second league again, if only for three seasons.

In the 420 encounters in 1350 hits were scored; which corresponds to an average of just over 3.2 goals per game. The top scorer won Gérard Grizzetti from Angoulême with 55 hits, which surpassed the previous record of Jean Nicolas from the season 1933/34, a goal; this new record should have more than half a century as stock. After the season gave the same five teams their professional status, of which three (Lille, Montpellier, Lens) had been around since the 1930s and since 1945 it Béziers; only Chaumont had played only three years under professional conditions. The dilemma of French football in the 1960s - a few "big" football players, often unattractive style of play, lack of success, declining viewership and revenue combined with high travel costs - impacted in the second division particularly strong, and not only the OSC Lille drew the consequence, prefer to compete in the amateur camp when going into debt further. For the following season came with the AS Monaco and OGC Nice two relegated from Division 1 added. New professional licenses not granted the Football Association, so that the second division should then be held with 16 participants.
