1968 Summer Paralympics

The 3rd Summer Paralympics were held in Tel Aviv in November 1968. The Paralympics for the year 1968 thus began as planned in Mexico City. The Mexican government withdrew two years before the Games from the responsibility to host the Summer Paralympics, back. The basic technical difficulties were cited.

Sports

The list of sports has been extended at these games. Lawn bowling, women's basketball and the 100 -meter wheelchair race of men were introduced. Big changes were made in the classification system of athletics, basketball and swimming.

Success of the German team

The German team took 35 medals in Tel Aviv. Manfred Emmel took a total of five medals in swimming and table tennis. Heinz Simon won four medals in archery, pentathlon, table tennis and shoe Johann Bauer ( athletics). Thus, Germany finished sixth in the national rankings.

Outstanding athletes

Roberto Marson from Italy was with ten gold medals the star of the Games. He won three in track, three in swimming and four in fencing. The American There Owen won two athletics gold, gold in the pentathlon and two gold medals in swimming, as well as silver with the basketball team and bronze in the javelin. The Australian swimmer Lorraine Dodd reached three records in one day.

Highlights

In wheelchair basketball tournament defeated in the final of Israel the USA with 47:37 points before 5,000 enthusiastic spectators.
