1969–70 European Cup Winners' Cup

The European Cup Winners 'Cup 1969/70 was the tenth playout of the competition of European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 33 club teams from 32 countries took part, including the defending champions Slovan Bratislava, 24 domestic cup winners and 8 losing cup finalists (Schalke 04, DFS Levski Spartak Sofia, BK Frem Copenhagen, Olympiakos Piraeus, PSV Eindhoven, Mjøndalen IF, Académica de Coimbra and Glasgow Rangers ).

From Germany was the DFB Cup finalists FC Schalke 04 at the start, as cup winners Bayern Munich had also become German champions and thus had qualified for the European Cup of Champions 1969/70. From the GDR took the fdgb Cup winners 1.FC Magdeburg, from Austria ÖFB Cup Winner SK Rapid Wien and from Switzerland FC St. Gallen in the contest.

The finale denied Manchester City and Gornik Zabrze in the Prater Stadium in Vienna on 29 April 1970. Manchester City won through 2-1.

Scorer was Włodzimierz Lubański Gornik Zabrze of seven goals.

Mode

The participants played as usual in pure Cup mode with return games the winner. Was there after two games Torgleichstand, the number of away goals scored decided ( away goals ). Was also equal in number to found a playoff place on neutral ground, since a penalty shootout was not provided. Finished the decider after a possible extension of a tie, the winner would have been determined by coin toss. The final was decided on one game at a neutral venue. If the score is level after extra time, a replay was scheduled, there was not yet provided in the final penalty kicks.

Preliminary round

The first leg took place on 27 August, instead of the return match on September 3, 1969.

First round

The first legs were held on September 17 ( Vestmannaeyja against Sofia on 30 August), the return matches on October 1 (Nicosia against Lierse on 24 and Sliema against Norrköping on September 30) 1969 instead.

2nd round

The first legs took place on November 26, 1969 November 12, the return games.

Quarterfinals

The first legs were held on March 18, 1970 March 4, the return games.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on April 15, 1970 April 1, the return games.

Decision-making

The match took place on 22 April 1970.
