1971–72 ABA season

The ABA 1971/72 season was the fifth season of the American Basketball Association. The season started on 13 October 1971. At Play operating participated 11 teams. Each team completed 84 games. The four best of each division qualified for the playoffs. On May 20, 1972, the season ended with the ABA Championship. The Indiana Pacers defeated in the finals of the New York Nets and were for the second time master of the ABA.

Season notes

  • For the first time took part in almost the same teams as last season in league play. Only the Texas Chaparrals gave up its status as a regional team and played back as Dallas Chaparrals.
  • Another first took place before the season friendship comparisons between teams from the ABA and the NBA. The first game denied the Milwaukee Bucks ( with Kareem Abdul- Jabbar ) with the Dallas Chaparrals on 21 September 1971, won with 106:103. The NBA won 18 of 26 games.
  • After the owner of the Memphis Pros gave up, bought 4600 fans from Tennessee shares in the team.
  • The ABA All-Star Game was held in Louisville, Kentucky on January 29, 1972.
  • Larry Miller of the Carolina Cougars establishes an ABA record against the Memphis Pros with 67 points.
  • The Kentucky Colonels had 68 wins with the most wins in a regular ABA season ever. Nevertheless, they did not survive the first round of the playoffs.
  • After the season, the Pittsburgh Condors and The Floridians were dissolved by the league and the players dispersed with a draft.
