1971–72 AHL season

The 1971/72 season was the 36th regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, the eleven teams played each 76 games. The eight best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes

The following changes were made before the start of the season:

  • The Boston Braves were added as an expansion team in the league
  • The Cincinnati Swords were added as an expansion team in the league
  • The Tidewater Wings were added as an expansion team in the league
  • The As de Québec were to Richmond, Virginia, moved and played from now on under the name Richmond Robins
  • The Voyageurs de Montréal have been to Halifax, Nova Scotia, moved and played from then on under the name of Nova Scotia Voyageurs

Calder Cup Playoffs

For the play-offs, the eight best teams in the American Hockey League qualified. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played, which first played the second against the third and then the winner of this duel in round two against the winners of the regular season. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. The first two play-off rounds and the finals were played in best- of-seven mode.
