1971–72 European Cup

The European Champions' Cup 1971/72 was the 17th edition of the competition. 33 club teams participated, including 32 national champion of the previous season with Ajax, the defending champion.

The participants played in the pure Cup mode (except for the final) round-trip games for the crown of European club football. In Torgleichstand first counted the greater number of away goals scored; there was also this a tie, the second leg was extended and, if necessary, immediately then discharged a penalty shootout to decide.

The finale took place in the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam before 61 354 spectators on 31 May 1972.

Preliminary round

The first leg took place on 19 August, the return match on August 26, 1971.

First round

The first legs took place on 15./26. ( Akranes vs. Sliema) September, the return matches on September 29, 1971.

2nd round

The first legs were held on November 3, 1971 October 20, the return games.

Quarterfinals

The first legs took place on 8./10. March and the return legs on 22 / 24th March 1972 instead.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on April 19, 1972 April 5, the return games.
