Course of the season and tables

Each team wore against each group opponent a back and a leg off, even before a home crowd and once away. It was the two- point rule; case of a tie, the goal difference was the decisive factor for the placement. In France, the number of plus points is called when specifying the point ratio exclusively; Again, this is done in Germany in the days of the 2- point rule usual notation.

In all three seasons of the dominated relegated from Division 1; particularly clearly achieved this Strasbourg- Meinau in Group C, the uncatchable topped the table, two months before the season ends. Sedan ( with Troyes and Lens ) and especially Valenciennes Anzin ( with Limoges and Brest ), however, had relatively long stubborn competitors resist. The fight against relegation from the basis of the proposed for the following season reduction of the second division to 36 participants, a particularly large circle was threatened by teams, was by some early stationary decisions - especially in groups A ( Creil, Évreux ) and C ( Martigues, GFC Ajaccio ) - but also by decisions that were actually only on the 30th match day, influenced. In addition to the four relegated teams per season also then had the three groups - Twelfth nor against the three best third division playoffs ( Barrages ) deny to avoid relegation. Four of the six newcomers to the Division 2 went immediately off again while the soccer player from Mantes- la -Ville were able to place only one on a secured Rank ( 6 in group B ).

In the 720 encounters 1,915 goals were scored; which corresponds to an average of 2.66 goals per game. The top scorer in each case were in group A Pierre Pleimelding ( Troyes, 20) in group B Joseph Yegba Maya ( Valenciennes, 28 - these were almost 60 % of all matches of his team) and in group C Marc Molitor ( Strasbourg, 40), the so overall league scorer. For the 1972/73 season three relegated from Division 1 were added; from the third- highest division rose no team directly, because all involved Zweitdivisionäre in the relegation matches against the lower division teams ( CA Lisieux, AS Strasbourg and ES Juvisy ) interspersed, with Poitiers had even lost to Lisieux, the third division but then on the rise renounced. Subsequently, however, the Football Association staggered Montpellier and Quevilly for financial reasons as punishment even in the third division; that benefited from the athletic already relegated teams from Cambrai and Bagneaux - Fontainebleau - Nemours.
