1971–72 SM-sarja season
The 1971/72 season was the 41st season of the Finnish SM- sarja. Champion for the 15th time overall in club Ilves Tampere. Lukko Rauma, Karhu -Kissat and JoKP Joensuu descended into the 2nd league.

Mode
In the main round each of the twelve teams completed a total of 22 games. The top six teams in the main round qualified for the final round, in which the Master was played. The other six teams had to compete for the league in a relegation round, where the three last placed the relegation round descended into the 2nd league. The results from the main round were incorporated into the final or relegation round. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
