1972–73 AHL season
The 1972/73 season was the 37th regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, the twelve teams played each 76 games. The eight best teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The New Haven Nighthawks were added as an expansion team in the league
- The Cleveland Barons were during the season to Jacksonville, Florida, relocated and played from now on under the name Jacksonville Barons
- The Tidewater Wings changed their name to Virginia Wings

Calder Cup Playoffs

For the play-offs, the eight best teams in the American Hockey League qualified. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played, which first played the second against the third and then the winner of this duel in round two against the winners of the regular season. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. The first two play-off rounds and the finals were played in best- of-seven mode.
