1972–73 European Cup

The European Champions' Cup 1972/73 was the 18th edition of the competition. 30 club teams participated, including 30 national champion of the previous season and with the defending champion Ajax Amsterdam.

For the Federal Republic of Germany took the FC Bayern Munich, part of the German Democratic Republic 1.FC Magdeburg, for Switzerland FC Basel and the SSW Innsbruck Austria.

The participants played in the Cup mode with pure (except for the final) round-trip games for the crown of European club football. Case of a tie, there was first extension, followed by a penalty shootout. Except for the defending champions Ajax Amsterdam and the Czechoslovak Spartak Trnava TAZ the clubs started in the first round.

The final took place on 30 May 1973 at the Stadium Crvena Zvezda Belgrade before 91 654 spectators instead. The final could decide Ajax with a goal from Johnny Rep for themselves. Thus, the Dutch club took the title for the third time and was allowed to keep the trophy forever.

First round

2nd round

The first legs were ( vs Bayern. Nicosia) on 24 / 25 October and 8 November (Sofia vs. Amsterdam), the return legs on 26 October (Nicosia vs. Bavaria) and 8./9./29. (Amsterdam vs. Sofia) November 1972 instead.

Quarterfinals

The first legs were held on March 21, 1973 March 7, the return games.

Semifinal

The first legs took place on April 25, 1973 April 11, the return games.
