1976–77 SM-liiga season
The SM- liiga - 1976/77 season was the second season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion for the fifth time overall and for the first time since the introduction of the SM - liiga Tappara Tampere, during FoPS relegation to the second division.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 36 regular season games against each other. While the first four teams for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed athlete had to play against the two best second division against relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.

SM- liiga relegation
The two last placed SM- liiga the main round and the two best second division played in round-trip game for promotion or relegation. Since Kärpät and FoPS each scored six points this played in a playoff against each other, which Kärpät with 9:3 could decide for themselves.
