1977–78 AHL season
The season 1977/78 was the 42nd regular season of the American Hockey League ( AHL ). During the regular season, the nine teams in the league should each 80 encounters deny, however, it was due to the premature withdrawal from the League by the Hampton Gulls to changes in the game plan. The top six teams in the AHL then played in a play-off round to the Calder Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Maine Mariners were added as an expansion team in the league
- The Broome Dusters from the dissolved North American Hockey League were included as an expansion team in the league and merged with the Rhode Iceland Reds of the AHL. Then the team in Binghamton, New York, was settled and it played from now on under the name of Binghamton Dusters
- The Philadelphia Firebirds from the dissolved North American Hockey League were included as an expansion team in the league
- The Hampton Gulls from the disbanded Southern Hockey League were included as an expansion team in the league

Calder Cup Playoffs
Mode
For the play-offs, the three best teams in the North Division and the South Division qualified. In the first two play-off rounds, the winner of each division were played, which first played the second against the third and then the winner of this duel in round two against the winners of the regular season. In round three, the two division winners to the finals. The first play-off round was played in best- of-five mode, the second play-off round and the finals were played in best- of-seven mode.
