1977–78 European Cup

The European Champions' Cup 1977/78 was the 23rd edition of the competition. 31 club teams participated, including 30 national champions from the previous season and defending champion FC Liverpool, who received a bye in the first round. The final was played on 10 May 1978 at London's Wembley Stadium.

The participants played in the Cup mode with pure (except for the final) round-trip games for the crown of European club football. In Torgleichstand first counted the greater number of away goals scored; there was also this a tie, the second leg was extended and, if necessary, immediately then discharged a penalty shootout to decide.

First round

The first legs took place on 14-15. (Bucharest vs. Atletico M. / Reykjavik vs. Belfast) September, the return matches on 28-29. (Belfast vs. Reykjavik) September 1977 instead.

2nd round

The first legs took place on November 2, 1977 October 19, the return games.

Quarterfinals

The first legs took place on 15 March 1978 on March 1, the return games.

Semifinal

The first legs were held on March 29, the return legs on April 12, 1978 instead.
