1977–78 ice hockey Bundesliga season

The 1977/ 78 Hockey - Bundesliga was the 20th season of the highest German Hockey League. German champion was the SC Riessersee who could return to the Bundesliga top with his ninth league title, after he had in the previous two years still have to fight against relegation. The defending champion Kölner EC had occupied the first place in the preliminary round, but the season ended at the end in third place. Runner-up was the Berlin SC.

Due to the disposal after end of season topping the league of fixed already relegated EC Deilinghofen could remain in the Bundesliga. In addition to the Master of the 2nd Bundesliga, the Augsburger EV, was also the second, the Mannheimer ERC, ascend to the Bundesliga. Due to the bankruptcy of the Krefeld EV could also third in the Bundesliga 2, the ESV Kaufbeuren, in addition to ascend into the elite league.

Mode

Compared to the previous year, no changes to the mode were made. After a preliminary round as a double round, the top six teams qualified for the Masters round, was determined in the form of a single round of the Masters. The four lowest ranked teams moved into the relegation round, this was however this season meaningless since the league should be increased from ten to twelve teams.
