1977–78 SM-liiga season
The SM- liiga season 1977/78 was the third season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion was the fourth time overall and for the first time since the introduction of the SM - liiga Ässät Pori.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 36 regular season games against each other. While the first four teams for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed athlete had to play against the two best second division against relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
