1977 Soviet Constitution

The Soviet Constitution of 1977 ( Russian Конституция СССР 1977 года, even Brezhnev Constitution called ) was the third and last of the Constitutions of the USSR. It was adopted under General Secretary Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev by the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet on 7 October 1977 and replaced the 1936 Constitution.

The Constitution defended the absolute rule of the workers, the so-called dictatorship of the proletariat under the leadership of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and the proposals for the development of communism in the country; the constitution also established a new text of the anthem of the Soviet Union and changes to flag and state emblem of the Soviet Union.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics should be a composite of all their constituent peoples nation known to values ​​and needs of workers, peasants, intellectuals and the working class of all nations and nationalities.

As a serious crime, the Constitution looked at the so-called parasitism, which expressed itself in the exploitation of the workers. Compulsory military service was as an expression of love for the fatherland of the toilers. Socialist property should be defended against vandalism and corruption. The defense of socialism required the education to new people with socialist consciousness.

Individual rights were respected only in connection with the needs of the collective. The Constitution multiplied the right to practice their religion and told the press, demonstration and freedom of speech, including the rights to the arts, to privacy and security of home and family as to social security.

The Constitution also contained a section concerning the resignation of republics from the federation of the USSR, which at the time of dissolution of the Soviet Union should be important later.

The date of the adoption of the Constitution, October 7, 1977, made ​​reference to the onset of the Great October Socialist Revolution on November 7, 1917.

The socialist constitution was replaced by the Constitution of the Russian Federation in 1993, defended the basic rights of the individual and civil liberties.
