1977 UCI Road World Championships

The UCI Road World Championships 1977 were held to 26 August in the Venezuelan San Cristóbal of 22. Thus Road World Championships were held in South America to 1968 ( Montevideo) for the second time.

The professionals in around 1000 meters above sea San Cristóbal 89 riders were at the start, of which only 33 reached the target. The cycling described it as " one of the worst World Cup race ever ": The course included a long, difficult pitch which had to cope with 15 times, constantly were added changing weather conditions, from the crackling rain over a stiff wind to high heat. In the penultimate round of the German Dietrich Thurau took off from a larger breakaway group of 14 riders, but was intercepted by Italian Francesco Moser, who also won ultimately. The other six West German drivers, including Gregor Brown and Klaus -Peter Thaler had, must gradually give up. The multiple Belgian champion Eddy Merckx came last but one to the finish before the French cycling star Raymond Poulidor.

The team time trial was held in La Fria 80 kilometers away. In the 800 meter high place ruled tropical, humid climate, which made many drivers hard to create. The winning team of the USSR had planned by three weeks previously opened their headquarters in La Fria. The West German team was ranked 14 out of 15, behind only Mexico. The reasons for the disappointing performance of the early failure of Friedrich von Loeffelholz and a penalty time of 2:15 for cycling back to the Polish team were cited.
