1977 World Table Tennis Championships

The 34th World Table Tennis Championship was held until April 5, 1977 in Birmingham ( England) in the Exhibition Centre National Exhibition Centre on March 26. It was attended by more than 500 athletes from 65 nations.

Men's team competition

First, the teams were divided into preliminary groups. The strongest according to the previous World Cup teams played in group A and B category I with 8 nations. The weaker teams met in Group A and B of category II with 9 or 10 nations. The remaining ( weakest ) teams remaining in 4 categories in category III with 6-7 depending Nations. After the mode " all against all " has a rank played.

This was followed by the second round. In category I, the first two teams played for the places 1 to 4 (and thus to the world title ), the third - and fourth-placed struggled for the places 5-8 in the fifth and sixth it was about the places 9 to 12, the two table last played for the places 13 to 16

  • The losers from (1) and (2) playing for 3rd and 4th
  • The winners from (3) and (4) played for 5th and 6th
  • The losers from (3) and (4) played for 7th and 8
  • The winners from (5) and (6) played by No. 9 and 10
  • The losers from (5) and (6) played for place 11 and 12
  • The winners from (7) and (8) played for place 13 and 14
  • The losers from (7) and (8) played for place 15 and 16

Women's team competition

The women's teams played in the same system as the men. In category I, there were groups A and B, each with 9 nations. Category II consisted of two groups of eight and in category III four groups of five nations were formed.

Just as in the men was followed by a second round and then the placement games.

The German participants were cared for by the national coaches Christer Johansson and Istvan Korpa. Captain of the men was Dr. Peter von Pierer, captain of the women's Hannelore sleep. Dr.Josip Trupkovic was the medical supervisor.

Men's team competition

The German team competed in Group A category I. She won against France ( 5-1 ), Australia (5-0 ), Czechoslovakia ( 5-3 ), Indonesia (5-0 ) and England ( 5-1 ). Defeats came against Hungary (1:5 ) and China (1:5). This was enough to place 3 Jochen Leiss scored a victory against the sixth in the world rankings Zhenshi Li from China.

Thus, the Germans played in the second round to the 5th to 8th places where the team surprisingly won against the USSR 5-4. In the final they met again on the CSSR. The 5-3 victory meant 5th place at the World Cup.

Women's team competition

The German ladies started in group B category I. They reached 6th place after victories against Yugoslavia ( 3-2 ), Indonesia ( 3-0) and Poland ( 3-1 ) and losing to France (2:3), USSR ( 1:3 ), Japan ( 0:3), South Korea ( 0:3 ) and Hong Kong (1:3).

Thus, it went in the second round for places 9 to 12 after the 1-3 defeat against Czechoslovakia, the German team played in the finals to place 11 or 12, the 3-0 victory against France meant 11th place

Individual competition

The weaker players had in qualifying rounds to select the mode " all against all " qualify for the main round. The stronger players were divided directly into the main round where each loser was eliminated immediately after the KO system.

The main round was a 128er field, with the ladies a 64er field in the men's.

Men's Singles

Heinrich Lammers had to first compete in the qualifying round, where he reached the main round after victories against Rafy Monjogolian (Lebanon), Goh Su Bae ( South Korea) and Palle Rud (Denmark). Here he won against the Scots Richard Yule, but then retired in the round of 64 against Hungary Gábor Gergely from.

Women's Singles

Monika Stork failed in the qualifying round. The win against Monika Grefberg (Finland ) was not enough as they lost to Annie Larsen ( Denmark).

Kirsten Kruger had prevailed in the qualifying round, but different in the main round by the defeat against Elmira Antonyan (USSR) from now on.

Wiebke Hendriksen also got no further: Against Ri Song Suk (North Korea) was the last stop.

The other hand, was more successful Ursula Hirschmüller. She won against Judit Magos (Hungary ), Pak Yong Ok (North Korea) and Ilona Uhlíková ( CSSR ). So it was - as the only European - in the quarter- finals, where they defeated the Chinese Zhang Deying.

Men's doubles

The main round consisted of a 64er field. Some double had to first prove themselves in the qualifying round.

Lammers played with the Swede Per Sandström double. With clear victories over Paul Raphel (USA) / Yosef Shifman ( Israel) ( without a fight ), Robert Blair / Graham Lassen ( New Zealand) and Aristides Filho / Ricardo Inokuchi (Brazil ) they qualified for the main round. Here they defeated Chen Cheng Shien / Vong Veng Lu ( Hong Kong), but eliminated in the Round of 32 against the Chinese Guo Yuehua / Liao Fu Min from.

For angels / Leiß was in the main round immediately end, as they lost to Wang Chun / Wang Hui Yuan (China).

Women Doubles

Here they established themselves against Indu Puri / Shailaja Salokhe (India), but then failed to Hendriksen ( Germany ) / Beatrix Kisházi (Hungary).

Hirschmüller / Kruger came against Patrice Fleming / Grace McKay (Scotland ) under the last 32 Here was against the Russians Elmira Antonyan / soy Rudnowa terminus.

The most successful was the double Hendriksen / Beatrix Kisházi (Hungary). Victories over Celia Akamatsu / Suely Yamada (Brazil), Stork / Ingrid Wirnsberger and Claude Bergeret / Brigitte Thiriet (France) took her to the knockout round. Here they lost to Pak Yong Ok (North Korea) / Yang Ying (China).

Mixed

The Mixed competition was held in a qualifying round and a main round with a 64er field, both groups respectively in the KO system. This competition, however, was not too appreciated; so took about István Jonyer, Kjell Johansson and Stellan Bengtsson, did not participate in others - even German - doubling a certain seriousness was missing.

Lammers / Stork already failed in the qualifying round of the Dutch Nico Van Slobbe / Marianne Van der Vliet.

Even angels / Hirschmüller came not in the main round. In the qualifying round they divorced after beating James Wuisan / Diana Wuisan (Indonesia) by losing to James Morris / Jan Morris ( New Zealand).

In the main round of the European champions Lieck / Hendriksen not survive the first round, as Orlowski / Uhlíková ( CSSR ) were stronger.

In contrast Leiß / Kruger came against Nige Eckersley / Karen Witt ( England) next round. In the 32er field they parted against the eventual champions secretin / Claude Bergeret (France).

Referee

From Germany, a team of three arbitrators participated: Manfred Ehler, Werner Hustedt and Egon Geese. They led the men's finals in doubles.

Policy

  • Kenya boycotted the World Cup according to a decision of the Organisation for African Unity OAU, because to participate in the World Cup countries that entertain sporting contacts with South Africa.
  • The Chinese Wang Chun refused to play against the Israeli Shlomo Mendelson in the men's singles competition. He was therefore disqualified. China boycotted Israel, with which it then had no diplomatic relations.
  • Many observers - about Eberhard Scholer - expressed the suspicion that some games were purposely lost by the Chinese, mainly against North Koreans.
