1978–79 European Cup Winners' Cup

The European Cup Winners 'Cup 1978/79 was the 19th playout of the competition of European Football Cup Winners' Cup. 31 club teams from 30 countries took part, including defending champions RSC Anderlecht, 21 reigning Cup winner and 9 losing cup finalists ( Aberdeen FC, Shakhtar Donetsk, PAOK Thessaloniki, Kalmar FF, FK Bodø / Glimt, Ballymena United, U.S. Luxembourg, FC Floriana and Fortuna Dusseldorf ). The representative of Albania ( it was not reported ), Finland ( qualified association has been dissolved ) and from Turkey (Cup winners Trabzonspor locked for the European Cup ) did not participate.

From Germany were DFB Cup finalist Fortuna Dusseldorf, from the GDR fdgb Cup winners 1.FC Magdeburg, from Austria ÖFB Cup Winner SSW Innsbruck and Switzerland Servette Geneva Winners' Cup at the start.

The final contest of FC Barcelona and Fortuna Dusseldorf at St. Jakob- Park in Basel on 16 May 1979. FC Barcelona continued with 4:3 ( 2:2, 2:2 ) after extra time and won for the first time European Cup Winners' Cup.

The participants played as usual in pure Cup mode with return games the winner. Was there after two games Torgleichstand, the number of away goals scored decided ( away goals ). Was also equal in number to an extension took place in the return game in which was also the away goals rule. Ruled by the end of the extension is still a tie, a penalty shoot-out was performed. The final was decided on one game at a neutral venue. If the score is level after extra time the winner would also have been determined in a penalty shootout.
