1978–79 NHL season

The NHL 1978/79 season was the 62nd season of the National Hockey League. 17 teams each played 80 games. The Stanley Cup won by the Canadiens after a 4-1 victory in the final series against the New York Rangers for the fourth time in a row. Helped also had Boston's coach, the charismatic Don Cherry. In the semifinals, Boston led 4-3 in Game 7 and it was still 2:34 to play, as a faulty substitution or the then following Power Play brought the Bruins to the finals and Cherry for his job. After his sixth knee surgery had Bobby Orr tried again, but on 8 November was final for Orr conclusion.

In the shadow of the NHL, the WHA was fighting for its survival, but it should be the last season of competitive league. But a 17 -year-old caused a stir there. In Indianapolis, Wayne Gretzky started in his first season as a professional. Because drug abuse the NHL Don Murdoch detained by the Rangers for the entire season, but pardoned him after 40 games.
