The SM- liiga - 1978/79 season was the fourth season of the Finnish SM- liiga. Finnish Champion for the sixth time overall and the second time since the introduction of the SM - liiga Tappara Tampere.

Regular Season
Mode
The ten teams in the SM- liiga first played in 36 regular season games against each other. While the first four teams for the play- offs qualified, the two last placed athlete had to play against the two best second division against relegation. For a win, each team was given two points, a draw there was a point and a defeat.
