1978 British Formula One season

The Aurora AFX Formula 1 series in 1978, also known as British Formula 1 Championship in 1978, was a single-seater racing series, which was extended by the regulations of the racing formula 1, but also racing cars in the Formula 5000 and Formula Atlantic were to start. The race series began on 24 March 1978, the International Gold Cup at Oulton Park and ended after the twelfth scoring run on 24 September at Snetterton.

Championship

1978 took place the first season of the Aurora AFX Formula 1 series, in which 38 pilots were trying to qualify for the race. Hazards was with older Formula 1 and Formula 5000 cars. Overall victory in the championship secured with five victories this season, the Briton Tony trimmer on a McLaren M23.

With the older cars, the races of the Aurora AFX Formula 1 series could not quite reach the level of the Formula 1 World Championship races. As an example, the Grand Prix of Great Britain in 1978 may serve at Brands Hatch in comparison with the Aurora race on the same track. Tony Trimmer tried in vain to qualify with the McLaren for the world championship race and drove it a lap time of 1.21.410. He was last in qualifying. When Aurora Race Geoff Lees scored in the Ensign N175 a pole position time of 1.22.160 and would then also have had no chance to qualify for the Grand Prix.
