1979–80 CHL season
The 1979/80 season was the 17th regular season of the Central Hockey League. The nine teams should complete in the regular season of 80 matches, but the Cincinnati Stingers pulled their team during the season from playing back, whereupon the game plan had to be changed. The Central Hockey League was played in a division. The point of best team in the regular season were the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, which also prevailed in the finals at the Adams Cup.

Team changes
The following changes were made before the start of the season:
- The Kansas City Red Wings stopped the game operation.
- The Birmingham Bulls of the World Hockey Association were added as an expansion team in the league.
- The Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association were added as an expansion team in the league.
- The Houston Apollos took after ten years of inactivity on the game mode again.
- The Indianapolis Checkers were added as an expansion team in the league.
