1979–80 DDR-Oberliga (ice hockey) season
The East German Ice Hockey Championship 1979/80 witnessed in contrast to previous years, yet another exciting duel between the two dynamo clubs from white water and Berlin. In the next six games Oberliga white water could keep open the decision until the last match, before finally the big favorite from Berlin to defend the title perfectly made with the clearest victory of the entire series on home soil.
In determining the best BSG unit Crimmitschau celebrated after five years without a title, the return to the throne and became a total of five triumphs again for the sole record title holder among amateur teams. The winner of the last four sweeps, BSG monsator Berlin, on the other hand had to be after 19 games without defeat again beaten by someone better.

The final tournament of the A group was held in late February / early March 1980, as last year in Crimmitschau. The B- group met three weeks later again in Crimmitschau.

Relegation was held in January 1981.
The BSG Leuna thus also launched in the 1980/81 season in the GDR best determination.
District excretion
It just was discharged a single playoff game between the district champions and masters of the merged district groups (playing Union). This took place immediately after the top determination.
