(1979 ) Sakharov is an asteroid of the inner main belt, which was discovered on September 24, 1960 as part of the Palomar - Leiden survey by the Dutch research team Cornelis Johannes van Houten, Ingrid van Houten - Groeneveld and Tom Gehrels.
The name of the asteroid is reminiscent of the Russian nuclear physicist, dissident and Nobel laureate Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov.
