1979 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships
The matches of 3 Junior A World Championship in 1979 found in the period 20 December 1978 to 3 January 1979 in Karlstad and Karlskoga in Sweden. For the first time there was a B- group at the U20 World Juniors, which was in Caen, France, played out.

World cup
The World Championship was held in Swedish cities Karlstad and Karlskoga. Junior World Champion was the third time the team of the Soviet Union. The team from Norway got off and was replaced by newly promoted Switzerland.
Mode
Approved players were under 20 years old (U -20). Participated have 8 teams that competed in two groups of four teams each. The top two teams in each group qualified for the Champions round. The four remaining teams played in the relegation round of the single relegated, in the relegation round games of the teams were taken from the preliminary round against their opponents.
