54 people took part in the main tournament. The entrance fee was $ 10,000. A special feature resulted from the performance of previous champions Thomas Preston, Brian Roberts, Doyle Brunson, Walter Pearson and Bobby Baldwin, all were eliminated within the first three days of the tournament.

- For the first time in the history of the WSOP a Royal Flush in 1979 in the main tournament played. This created Lakewood Louie 10 ♦ K ♦.
- After retiring Thomas Preston tapped out that George Huber wins.
- Hal Fowler reached the victory, even though he had only $ 1,700 left in chips at the end of the first tournament day.
- Hal Fowler pointed Bobby Hoff to second place. The previous year, Fowler was the one who was brought by Hoff to resign from the tournament.
