1979 World Wrestling Championships
The Wrestling World Championships 1979 took place from 21 to 28 August 1979 in San Diego instead. It was fought in both the Greco-Roman and free style. The wrestlers were divided into ten weight classes.

Greco-Roman
The competitions in the Greco-Roman style were held until August 24, 1979 by 21. In the weight category -74 kg there were two world champions: Ferenc Kocsis from Hungary and the Bulgarian Janko Schopow shared the first place. Previously, both wrestlers were disqualified for passivity. Silver was not awarded in this weight class. In addition to the three bronze medal winners two more German came into the final. In the weight category -57 kg -52 kg was fifth Pasquale Passarelli Fourth and Rolf Krauss in the weight class.

The competitions in freestyle took place between August 28, 1979 25. The wrestlers from the Soviet Union secured in nine of the ten competitions medals. Only defending champion Anatoly Beloglasow could come up with a sixth place in the weight category -52 kg not place on the medals. In addition to the medal winners of the GDR Harald Büttner was -100 kg fourth in the weight class. For Germany, Adolf Seger yet placed fifth in the weight category -82 kg and Eduard Giray sixth in the weight category -62 kg among the top six.
