The top eight teams in the preliminary round, which was held in the form of a double round, qualified for the play-offs. In the quarterfinals, played the first against the Eighth, the second against the Seventh, the third party against the Sixth and the Fourth against the fifth of the main round. The remaining teams in the preliminary round places 9 to 12 played in a relegation round the two relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. The relegation round was discharged, taking with all preliminary round points in a single round. The new mode was first seen from a sporting perspective very critical, because the title would not be the best team throughout the season, but only the best team in the final phase honored; Moreover, it would be relegated to a mere double round months of preliminaries in the opinion of critics. However, the League was able to record much higher viewing figures in the play- off games.

Preliminary round

Passport forger scandal

During the preliminary round, it was revealed that several foreign players were entered with fake German passports, thus to circumvent the limit on foreign players. From the so-called passport forger scandal two Bundesliga teams were concerned, on the one hand the previous Movers Duisburg SC, on the other, the two-time German champion Kölner EC. For both teams, all matches involving players counted with forged passports with 0:5 goals as lost. For the Duisburg SC, this meant relegation, Kölner EC slipped through the deduction of points from the playoff ranks and escaped relegation in the relegation round. Since the decision was made very late on the trigger, had the quarter-finals, where even the Kölner EC had taken part, be canceled and rescheduled. The EV Füssen, who had already contested two games in the relegation round ( 10:8 to 5:5 in Bad Nauheim and Duisburg), adjusted according to the playoffs.

On March 9, 1981, also came in the Bundesliga VfL Bad Nauheim against the Kölner EC to a mass brawl, prompting the referee including match, game misconduct and disciplinary sanctions imposed a total of 166 penalty minutes.
